Don’t wait until an obstacle is exactly in front of your character. Look ahead a little and see where the next safe path will probably open up. Your early choices allow you more time to respond since your character is moving automatically.
Coins are nice for growth, but it's seldom worth risking your whole run for a single one. If your currency is near a barrier, try to keep your character on the safe path first.
Combine this with the BEST counter as your run becomes longer. If you are near your previous record, focus on constant progress and only add hazards if the route is obviously safe.
